Pokémon Champions OU, Singles Format Guide
Champions OU is the Smogon Singles tier built on the Pokémon Champions client. Same OU framework — usage cutoffs, suspect tests, banlist iteration — but with Mega Evolution back, a narrower roster (Young MA-Dex), and Tera disabled at launch. This guide is anchored to the rules we have today; live usage data layers in once Smogon publishes the first monthly cutoff.

At a glance
Champions OU sits in Smogon's tier ladder the same way Gen 9 OU does: it's the default Singles tier, populated by Pokémon at the “OU usage cutoff” (~3.41% of ranked battles), bounded above by Ubers and below by UU. The format is brand new in 2026, so historical usage doesn't exist yet — the tier ceiling and floor will settle over the first 2-3 months.

What is Champions OU
Pokémon Champions is the 2026 competitive platform from The Pokémon Company. Champions OU is the Smogon Singles tier running on that platform — same tier philosophy as Gen 9 OU, applied to the Champions-eligible roster.
Smogon's tier system measures usage in ranked play, partitions Pokémon into Ubers / OU / UU / RU / NU / PU / LC by cutoff thresholds, and runs suspect tests to ban Pokémon that warp the metagame. The framework is platform-agnostic; whether the underlying client is Pokémon Showdown, a cartridge, or Champions, the tier logic is the same. Champions OU is the natural extension of that framework onto the new platform.
Why Champions OU is structurally different from Gen 9 OU
Three platform-level rules reshape the format:
- Mega Evolution is back. Absent on cartridge since Gen 7, Mega returns as the gimmick mechanic. One Mega per team, per battle.
- Young MA-Dex roster. Champions excludes Legendary, Sub-Legendary, and Paradox Pokémon. Smogon's tier ladder is built on top of this filter — Kingambit, Great Tusk, Iron Valiant are gone.
- Tera is in the files, disabled at launch. Same as VGC Reg M-A. Smogon would react to whatever the platform enables.

Format rules
Champions OU inherits the standard Smogon OU ruleset, applied through the Champions roster filter. Most rules are familiar; the divergences are the Mega slot and the Young MA-Dex restriction.

Champions OU vs Gen 9 OU
The biggest competitive question for OU players in 2026 is what carries over from Gen 9 OU and what doesn't. The answer: more changes than continuities.

Top playstyles
Champions OU's playstyle distribution will look more like Gen 6 OU than Gen 9 OU — because Mega Evolution is the dominant offensive ceiling, and the absence of Paradox / Restricted brings the meta closer to traditional bulky-offense and balance.
Hyper Offense
Mega cornerstone + setup chain
Mega Lucario or Mega Garchomp as the cornerstone, Dragon Dance / Swords Dance partners, and hazard support. Defining offensive archetype: trade efficiency for speed control.
Bulky Offense
Mega Scizor / Mega Aggron
Scizor Mega's Bullet Punch priority is the format's premier mid-game closer.
Balance
Mega Latias + win-condition
Mega Latias as both special wall and Calm Mind win-condition. Pairs with Heatran / Garganacl / Tyranitar (non-Mega) for defensive depth.
Stall
Mega Sableye / Mega Slowbro
Magic Bounce Mega Sableye + Garganacl Salt Cure stall is the format's recovery-heavy build. Sleep + Toxic + Recover.
Weather
Mega Charizard Y / Mega Tyranitar
Auto-weather setters return as cornerstones. Sun (Charizard-Y) and sand (Tyranitar) cores get permanent weather support.
Trick Room
Mega Camerupt / Mega Aggron TR
Slow Mega + Trick Room setter (Mr. Rime, Cresselia equivalents from Young MA-Dex). Niche but powerful answer to hyper-offense.
Expected tier shifts vs Gen 9 OU
Once Smogon publishes the first month of Champions OU usage data, we'll see real numbers. Until then, these are the structural shifts the rule changes force.
| Pokémon | Gen 9 OU rank | Champions OU expectation | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kingambit | Top 3 | Top 1-2 | Paradox Pokémon gone; its biggest checks (Great Tusk, Iron Valiant) leave the format. |
| Garganacl | Top 10 | Top 5 | Salt Cure stall stronger with fewer offensive Paradox threats. Mega Latias check still present. |
| Gholdengo | Top 5 | Top 5-8 | Stays viable — still hazard-control + Make It Rain spread is unmatched. |
| Dragonite | Mid-OU | Top 10 | Multiscale + ExtremeSpeed returns to prominence; no Iron Valiant + no Booster Energy = easier setup windows. |
| Glimmora | Top 15 | Top 5 (Mega) | Mega Glimmora is a new Champions-introduced Mega; Toxic Debris hazard pivot is a defining role. |
| Baxcalibur | Top 15 | Top 8 (Mega) | Mega Baxcalibur — 170 Atk + Reckless Glaive Rush is one of the format's premier offensive Megas. |
| Garchomp | Mid-OU | Top 10 (Mega) | Mega Garchomp Sand Force back to relevance with Mega Tyranitar enabling permanent sand. |
| Clodsire | Mid-OU | Top 15 | Unaware + status-immune Poison Heal core gains tempo from Iron Hands absence. |
| Corviknight | Mid-OU | Top 10 | Defog + Pressure remains best hazard-control bird in absence of Skarmory / Galarian Articuno. |
| Tinkaton | Low-OU | Mid-OU | Knock Off + Stealth Rock + Encore stays niche — Gigaton Hammer 2-turn cooldown limits offensive ceiling. |

FAQ
Is Pokémon Champions OU an official format or a Smogon format?
Champions OU is the Smogon-tier-style Singles ladder built on the Pokémon Champions client. It uses Smogon's tier framework — usage cutoffs, suspect tests, banlist updates — but runs on the Champions platform rather than Pokémon Showdown. The Pokémon Company runs official VGC (Reg M-A) on Champions; Smogon's tier council manages Champions OU.
How is Champions OU different from Gen 9 OU on cartridge?
Three structural differences. (1) Mega Evolution is legal in Champions OU — back from absence since Gen 7. (2) The roster is the Young MA-Dex (no Legendary, Sub-Legendary, or Paradox Pokémon), so the OU power ceiling sits lower than Gen 9 OU's Kingambit / Great Tusk / Iron Valiant axis. (3) Tera is in the client but not active in Champions OU at launch.
When does Smogon publish Champions OU usage stats?
Smogon's monthly chaos JSON for Champions OU is expected to start once the format hits a stable battle-count threshold (Smogon's historical minimum is ~10,000 ranked battles per month per cutoff). On Pokékipe, format pages auto-pick up new tiers when Smogon publishes — see the live data on the /sv path when available.
What playstyles work in Champions OU?
Hyper offense built around a Mega cornerstone, bulky offense with Mega Scizor or Mega Aggron, and balanced builds with Mega Latias as a special wall + win condition. The narrower dex (no Restricted, no Paradox) pushes the meta toward Mega-anchored cores rather than Booster Energy Paradox cores.
Can I import a Gen 9 OU team into Champions OU?
Partially. Pokémon shared between formats (Kingambit, Garganacl, Glimmora, Baxcalibur, Iron Hands has no analogue, etc.) will transfer via Pokémon HOME, but any Paradox or Restricted Pokémon are illegal. The Mega slot is a fundamentally new build axis that has no Gen 9 OU equivalent, so most teams need rebuilding around their Mega cornerstone.
Will Tera ever be active in Champions OU?
The Pokémon Company has stated Terastallization is in the Champions game files but disabled in launch regulations. Smogon would follow whatever the platform enables. If Tera activates later, Smogon's tier council will likely run a suspect test on Tera in OU before deciding the ban / unban / restrict outcome, similar to the Gen 9 OU process in 2023.
